雖然在紐約住4年多, 我很少去卡內基聽音樂會, 而且一直到最近朋友Peiti指點後, 才知道原來卡內基有10美元的學生票啦! 好像是每個禮拜三會宣布開放當週的學生票, 到票房去買即可. 我看到預告說4/25著名男中音Bryn Tefel要演出英文曲目, 非常想看! 收到電子信說開放學生票當天我就跑去卡內基音樂廳買了, 其實我很擔心會不會名額少, 到的時候搞不好已經買不到了. 所幸很輕易就買到了, 不然這音樂會最便宜的票也要50多美元啊! 拿到10美元學生票超爽啦!!!
Bryn Terfel來自威爾斯, 是諸如大都會歌劇院和Convent Garden那種等級的歌劇界明星, 也出了很多張專輯. 我看過他主演的歌劇Don Giovanni的DVD 聲樂教練金小姐說她覺得Bryn Terfel是她看過把歌劇Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg裡Sachs這角色詮釋得最棒的歌唱家. 鋼琴伴奏Malcolm Martineau也是世界級的伴奏家, 在古典歌唱界相當搶手.
這個音樂會的曲目前半都是英國作曲家的藝術歌曲, 大多是用英國詩人John Masefield的詩譜的曲. 音樂會後半則有韓德爾和莫札特的義大利歌曲, 舒伯特的德文歌曲以及佛瑞的法文歌曲. 但壓軸的乃是塞爾特民謠, 包括大家耳熟能詳的Loch Lomond和Danny Boy, 還有威爾斯語的民謠, 看起來有點像西班牙文. 因為Bryn Terfel身為威爾斯人, 很熱心地推廣家鄉的民謠, 就像我們的台灣民謠也是有獨一而二的風味, 都是寶貴文化遺產喔! 我也是衝著這些民謠才特別想聽這場音樂會, 如果曲目只是普通詠嘆調的話, 買CD就可以聽到了.
我對John Masefield的詩沒怎麼熟悉, 在這次音樂會的曲目裡看到一首The vagabond還滿喜歡的, 知識份子比較會鑽牛角尖思考人生意義, 這首詩則是以流浪漢角度, 描述他對於世界的一切都不太清楚, 連上帝也好像只是刮風的山丘上一顆星星吧, 人生就是從睡醒到睡著, 死亡也只是一片蓋滿苔癬的冷清墓碑. 流浪漢對人生的體會貌似很簡單, 但是被Masefield寫出濃厚的詩意.

另外一首Passing By根據節目單是17世紀英國詩人Robert Herrick的情歌作品, 不過查了其他網站說不是他寫的, 作者無名. 裡面最後兩句說就算我愛的人有改變天地的力量, 也無法改變我對她終生不逾的愛(這是我的解讀啦, 那個時代的英文文法比較憋紐說.)

大家很熟悉的民謠Loch Lomond, 我本來都以為是講一對情侶不得不分開, 在湖邊告別, 說你走那條路, 我走這條路, 孔雀東南飛啦! 看了節目單的解說才知道原來這首民謠源自18世紀, 蘇格蘭人起義反抗英國, 被打敗抓去斬首的人, 他們的頭插在尖棒上沿著大路High road展示, 而傷心的親戚則走著平民專用的小路Low road回家鄉. 另一個說法是被抓到叛軍中有對兄弟, 哥哥懇求警衛於午夜把他處刑換取弟弟的命, 這樣弟弟可以走著跨越山嶺的High road回家鄉, 而他自己的魂魄也會沿著Low road回去. 這Low road是神話中妖精挖的隧道, 專門讓離家背井死去的人的靈魂能回家鄉的途徑.

當晚至少90%席位坐滿, 我的學生票當然是離最遠的陽台座, 又忘了帶望遠鏡, 滿懊惱說. 而且前半場我坐錯排, 應該坐B排卻坐到C排, 不過那位置也沒別人來認領, 還真巧. 就在我正前方坐在最靠近陽台邊緣的女生, 身體整個往前靠在邊邊, 擋住了舞台, 我旁邊的老太太很不爽, 還出聲要求她有公德心一點, 可是沒有奏效Orz 中場休息我離席了一下, 回來時坐對了B排, 這才發現原來之前我是坐C排, 奇怪的是我才離席一下而已, 換排不換號, 怎麼前後左右人事全非了. 那個擋視線的女生消失了, 旁邊的觀眾的模樣打扮都是前半場沒看到的, 那位老太太也不見了O_O 這是怎樣啊, 大家都講好只看前半場, 後半場換新觀眾嗎?........................
Bryn Terfel的聲音真是好宏亮, 整個大大的Stern廳都可清楚聽到, 連說話的聲音都滿清晰的. 咬字很好, 每個子音也都清楚發出來, 不過我個人淺見覺得聲線沒有很legato. 曲目中有首Mother Carey歌詞唱得超快, 太厲害了, 他要是去參加繞口令比賽一定會冠軍XDDDDD 台風也很親切, 還講了不少笑話, 可惜他的威爾斯口音不太容易聽懂笑點. 最好笑的是每首歌唱完後的短暫靜默都會出現東一聲西一聲的咳嗽聲, 該不會是不少觀眾有感冒, 然後一直忍住咳嗽, 等他唱完才發洩吧? 有一首歌唱完後四繼響起的咳嗽聲太誇張了點, Bryn Terfel就說你們不喜歡這首歌吼? 觀眾都大笑起來, 他就說好, 下一首歌你們要跟著唱喔, 不知道歌詞可以用哼的, 預備, 呼吸! 結果全場還真的跟著哼起來, 因為是眾所熟知的民謠All through night, 所以旋律不難哼XD
音樂會結束後, 掌聲當然不斷, Bryn Terfel也有回舞台唱安可曲, 但沒想到唱完下台後, 觀眾繼續鼓掌, 他又回來唱了一首安可曲! 然後歷史重演, 總共唱了三首安可曲, 真是很體貼觀眾的藝人! 能親眼親耳欣賞著名音樂家的演出很令人興奮呢! 月初還有一位世界級女高音Jessye Norman的獨唱會, 我也要去買學生票!
